Monday Funday: A morning at Martin Library with YDR Books Editor Sarah Chain

NOTE TO SELF: Pick up books. We are, at the library, after all.

Last week, I planned to visit Martin Library in York with York Daily Record/Sunday News books editor Sarah Chain.

We decided to promote the visit as a meet-up/office hours/please-come-talk-to-us event in the Sunday News, ydr.com and social media channels.

Deb Sullivan, York County Libraries community relations director, even put our visit on the calendar.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., we parked our carcasses on the second floor of the downtown building.

Get your book on … with me and YDR books editor Sarah Chain at meet-up Monday

Stop by Martin Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to meet YDR books editor Sarah Chain and share your ideas for coverage.

So, here’s the deal.

Part of my ideaLab project is to drag other people down with me.

Next week, my victim is York Daily Record/Sunday News books editor and multi-platform features journalist (and my super awesome friend) Sarah Chain.

I’m coordinating with York County Libraries to hold a meet-up Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Martin library downtown for book lovers and people who have input about ydr.com, the York Daily Record/Sunday News and any of our other bajillion awesome products. Continue reading

Mobile reporting find: Woman taking leashed rabbit for a walk

Sometimes, I feel like my job title should include “finder-of-weird-shit.”

There was this, when I reported remotely from the mall.

And this.

And this.

Oh, and this, which has remained our No. 1 most visited blog post on York Common Cents for the past two months. Continue reading

Co-worker Sean says: Mobile journalists are basically Roaming Gnomes … or something

My co-worker Sean Adkins compared me to the Roaming Gnome last week. If I could move my office to the above location, all would be right with the world.

Throughout my mobile reporting adventures, I’ve taken pictures of my computer and whatever beverage or snack I’m enjoying on-the-job.

It’s my way of saying, “Hey guys. I’m hanging out here.”

I usually post it on the ydr.com facebook page to let people know where to find me.

As usual, my coworker Sean Adkins was making fun of me the other day.

His love of gnomes runs deep.

So, I wasn’t sure whether it was a compliment or an epic diss when he compared my mobile reporting photo sessions to this little guy here. Continue reading

Keepin’ it classy: Working from the 86-year-old Yorktowne Hotel

The morning started in style.

Don’t get me wrong.

I love a loud, obnoxious, shenanigans-filled ruckus as much as the next reporter.

I love frolicking among York County’s strangest in gas stations, diners and undisclosed locations.

I love it all — just not when I’m trying to meet deadlines.

On Tuesday, I just needed to work — transcribe long recordings, specifically.

And what better place, I figured, than the elegant, 86-year-old historic landmark I had written about a few weeks earlier. Continue reading
