Back at it! Visit me Thursday at John’s Diner in Fairview Township.

I love diner coffee. I snapped this one after a visit to Alexander’s near the York Fairgrounds.

So, I have to catch my breath here.

It’s been an interesting month.

For most of September, we were down a man (or woman) on the business desk, which has led to minimal time to focus on fun things, like hanging out with random people.

(Though I did manage to have some fun with my toys.)

But I’m back. Back with vengeance. And I’m headed where no man has gone before.

…well, at least I haven’t. For more information, click here. Continue reading

Back from vacation … now let’s talk about our Smart Magazine ‘playdate’ at Cousler Park

So, I meant to write about how this went a while back … before I got some much needed beach time.

Feet in the sand at Dewey Beach, Del., just after I dropped off the blogging map.

More folks are catching on … meeting some cool people through my ideaLab ‘mobile reporter’ project

Here’s something super cool.

A poorly executed iPhone photo by yours truly. But thanks anyway to Courtney Shumway and Jay Taylor for showing up! You guys rock.

I’m starting to get more unique visitors when I work at places around the community for my ideaLab project.

I’m also meeting more random people that just start talking to me, because I’m that weirdo sitting at a coffee counter on my laptop.

That’s kind of the objective of this, you guys.

Sure beats staring at Sean Adkins all day.

A few weeks ago it was a woman with a local church. Continue reading

Playground play date with Smart Magazine editor April Trotter and I

This is April. She’s a super cool magazine editor.

Remember that time Sarah Chain and I visited Martin Library?

As much as I love books, it’s nice outside. And what better way to solicit story ideas than hang out in the great outdoors?

(OK, not exactly — unless you a playground in Manchester Township, York County, counts.)

Newly crowned Smart Magazine Editor April Trotter and I will be hanging out at Pavilion D near the new playground at Cousler Park Aug. 23 from 9 to noon. Click here to read more. Continue reading

Monday Funday: A morning at Martin Library with YDR Books Editor Sarah Chain

NOTE TO SELF: Pick up books. We are, at the library, after all.

Last week, I planned to visit Martin Library in York with York Daily Record/Sunday News books editor Sarah Chain.

We decided to promote the visit as a meet-up/office hours/please-come-talk-to-us event in the Sunday News, ydr.com and social media channels.

Deb Sullivan, York County Libraries community relations director, even put our visit on the calendar.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., we parked our carcasses on the second floor of the downtown building.

Get your book on … with me and YDR books editor Sarah Chain at meet-up Monday

Stop by Martin Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to meet YDR books editor Sarah Chain and share your ideas for coverage.

So, here’s the deal.

Part of my ideaLab project is to drag other people down with me.

Next week, my victim is York Daily Record/Sunday News books editor and multi-platform features journalist (and my super awesome friend) Sarah Chain.

I’m coordinating with York County Libraries to hold a meet-up Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Martin library downtown for book lovers and people who have input about ydr.com, the York Daily Record/Sunday News and any of our other bajillion awesome products. Continue reading

Anatomy of a Central Market meet-up: Getting outside the office, generating page views

This story begins with my shameless self promotion a few days before the meet-up, both online and in the paper. It’s common sense:

If you want people to see you, you have to let them know where you are.

Here’s the “promo” that ran on ydr.com and in the York Daily Record/Sunday News early last week.
