First try at New Hive: A graphic on BAE Systems and the proposed shutdown of the Bradley Industrial Base

So, it’s 10 p.m., and I really wish I was watching Chicago Fire.

However, I got addicted to New Hive instead. Continue reading

A ‘Thank You’ from the students at Central York High School

We got a note from the students over at Central York High School that just made my day Friday.

As you recall, wle did a NewsVroom presentation for two journalism classes a couple weeks ago.

Anywho, you can read it for yourselves.

A lot of them seemed SUPER enthused about getting out of the cubicle.

The good, bad and ugly stuff that happened to me in 2012

I detest typical “Year in Review” posts:

I ran in 2012 wearing these ridiculous glasses with my little sister, who came to York for the occasion.

I rang in 2012 wearing these ridiculous glasses with my little sister, who came to York for the occasion.

“I GOT ENGAGED.”

“I HAD A BABY.”

“I BOUGHT A HOUSE.”

Yep, I’ve done none of said things. I’m still living in my awesome bachelorette pad apartment in York city. I don’t have a ring on it. And there certainly isn’t a fetus growing inside of me (that I’m aware of).

But hey, I still had a pretty awesome year full of adventures, successes and things that made me think.

Here’s a list of the good, the bad and the ugly from 2012: Continue reading

Liveblogging the ‘pie party’ and other assorted random weekend shenanigans

Because I’m ridiculous …

And because I overestimate the interest in my random adventures …

And because I want practice liveblogging, so I’m not like “Um, how the heck do I use this?” when I have to do it for breaking news …

I’m liveblogging the rural ‘pie party’ extravaganza I’m going to around 7 p.m. Click here on our York Common Cents blog for updates, if you care.

Feel free to chime in with a comment and annoy me. Continue reading

That time I visited a place where no one knew what the York Daily Record was … and it’s OK

Fruit cup + toast + computer + Hootsuite = love.

I got some good feedback from my column today, which focused on my travels Thursday through northern York County, a place that doesn’t get much attention from our paper.

So far, it inspired one couple to invite me to their a “pie party” next week in the rural farmlands of northern York county. More on that later.

I just wanted to add a few tidbits of awesomeness from yesterday, despite the annoying fact that no one intentionally stopped by to share a story idea.

But hey, it happens sometimes — even when you promote the crap out of yourself. Continue reading

Back at it! Visit me Thursday at John’s Diner in Fairview Township.

I love diner coffee. I snapped this one after a visit to Alexander’s near the York Fairgrounds.

So, I have to catch my breath here.

It’s been an interesting month.

For most of September, we were down a man (or woman) on the business desk, which has led to minimal time to focus on fun things, like hanging out with random people.

(Though I did manage to have some fun with my toys.)

But I’m back. Back with vengeance. And I’m headed where no man has gone before.

…well, at least I haven’t. For more information, click here. Continue reading

From iPhone photo, to online, to print: Royal Farms chicken takes a tumble

A large chicken takes a tumble.

So, this is a first.

I was working this Saturday, and all hell broke loose with the weather.

I was driving back to the office from lunch when a monsoon erupted.

I called my editor and asked if I should get a photo of something going on to post with a web update.

The rain. People hating the rain. Whatever.

Taking a spin in the York Daily Record/Sunday News NewsVroom and VISIT ME AT THE YORK FAIR!

On Labor Day, I had drive around in the NewsVroom, a van designed to deliver a hands-on media/news experience for the people of York County.

Have I mentioned I’m the world’s worst driver? Continue reading

Back from vacation … now let’s talk about our Smart Magazine ‘playdate’ at Cousler Park

So, I meant to write about how this went a while back … before I got some much needed beach time.

Feet in the sand at Dewey Beach, Del., just after I dropped off the blogging map.

Finally, Lauren learns how to shoot video that doesn’t get cut off in Brightcove!

The guys from the new event, White Rose Thunder, invited the media out Thursday for a flat track racing demonstration at the York Fairgrounds.

I’ve written about the event before, at least twice, so I figured I’d do a video with a QR code for print, since I figured motorcycles whizzing around a dry dirt track has to show up great on camera. Continue reading
