My weekend is better than your weekend: A Tout story

ydrtoutersIn an effort to help everyone in the newsroom understand the storytelling potential of Tout, there was a newsroom wide “Tout Your Weekend” contest that ended today.

What is Tout?

It’s a video-sharing platform that allows you to capture 15-second status updates that post through Twitter and Facebook.

It also allows you to pause the video and switch frames, so you don’t have to use an editor. Continue reading

Happy Thanksgiving: The many poses of my free grocery store turkey

A turkey journalist on deadline.

There comes a time in every woman’s life where she must come to grips with the retail gimmicks associated with different holidays.

For me, today was the day. Continue reading

Co-worker Sean Adkins poses with a cucumber

York Daily Record/Sunday News Business Reporter Sean Adkins poses with a succulent, green vegetable.

Just a slice of life over here at the YDR business pod.

The other day, copy editor Teresa Cook gave me a fresh cucumber plucked from her garden.

Naturally, I figured, I’d use it to harass Sean.

This includes, but is not limited to, putting the elongated veggie in my purse and asking, “Is that a cucumber in my bag, or are you just happy to see me?”

Glad he has a sense of humor.

Mobile reporting find: Woman taking leashed rabbit for a walk

Sometimes, I feel like my job title should include “finder-of-weird-shit.”

There was this, when I reported remotely from the mall.

And this.

And this.

Oh, and this, which has remained our No. 1 most visited blog post on York Common Cents for the past two months. Continue reading

Yep, this happened. #poopatwork

Journalism After Hours: Woman wearing surgical booties saunters into York bar

Woman wearing plastic surgical booties.

The funny thing about journalism: Even when you’re not at work, you’re still at work.

To be clear: I carry my iPhone and a notepad EVERYWHERE. It’s the digital journalist way.

You never know when a story — or a very peculiar woman — might cross your path.

Early Friday evening, I was responsibly enjoying a refreshing adult beverage with some associates in the White Rose City when a woman, clad in what appeared to be blue surgical booties emerged from the darkness. Continue reading

Stoopin’ in the city: No one is safe from the Boyer CreeperCam

Tis the season to be stoopin'! I snagged this gem with my iPhone and posted it on ydr.com's York City Limits blog.

To be clear, I have never in my life owned an iPhone.

So, when I was chosen for Digital First Media’s ideaLab team, I was thrilled with the prospect of having a high quality digital camera (as well as the Twitters) at my disposal at all times. Continue reading

R.I.P. @fakelaurenboyer … You were short-lived but hilarious.

My short-lived imposter. Click to enlarge.

For a brief second, I felt pretty cool this week after a brush with the “fake” Twitter account phenomena reserved primarily for dignified celebrities like Rick Santorum and David Hasselhoff.

I was confused, yet ecstatic.

The imposter — who I later discovered was another York Daily Record staffer — perfectly, and hilariously, nailed my love of all things crass.

I nabbed the above screenshot before the account was deleted.
