Have you met the ‘murse?’ Read my latest piece.

In today’s Sunday business section, I have a byline about murses.

Why?

I don’t really know. Does a story about murses have to happen for a reason?

If you haven’t figured this out by now, allow me to explain it: Continue reading

How do you write an obituary for a cookie?

This photo, provided by Rodney Stauffer, was too grainy to use for print. It's a old Milk Custard box.

This photo, provided by Rodney Stauffer, was too grainy to use for print. It’s a old Milk Custard box.

This might be one of my favorite consumer-y stories I’ve done in a long time.

It started with an email about cookies. People couldn’t find them.

At first, I thought it sounded ridiculous.

It’s a fact of life. Companies discontinue products all the time.

After all, whatever happened to French Toast Crunch or Surge? BuzzFeed has a pretty good list right here.

So, what makes this situation different?

I’m going out on a limb here. No one’s holiday traditions (God. At least I hope not.) are tied to short-lived sugary soft drinks or strange, toast-shaped cereals. Continue reading

YOU VOTE: What West Manchester Mall Tout video should Sean star in?

Sean Adkins is the star of any show. Just watch these Touts.

Sean (It’s pronounced See-Ann) Adkins is the star of any show. Just read this post. Such a ham.

I’ve been covering the West Manchester Mall for about a year now, since it was sold.

Veteran reporter Sean Adkins has been covering it for much longer.

So, before someone executes plans that would turn the mall into a legitimate place, we want to have a little fun. Continue reading

I met an awesome WWE-loving pastor in McDonald’s the other day

Here is Pastor James hanging out in the background of my Tout video.

Here is Pastor James hanging out in the background of my Tout video.

On Monday, I went to McDonald’s in Springettsbury Township to get some work done.

They say news doesn’t walk by your desk, and this particular fast food establishment has had plenty of action in the last year.

Seemed like a good choice.

I got my coffee, sat down in a cushy chair and ignored the fact that people were obviously staring at me for being that dressed-up weirdo on a laptop in McDonald’s. Continue reading

ALL THE BOYERS EVER: A profile story by an actual Boyer

Aside from Donald, these are all the Boyers you'll ever need to know. Meet my family -- Stan, Ann, and Casey.

Aside from Donald, these are all the Boyers you’ll ever need to know. Meet my fabulous family — Stan (the man), Ann, and Casey.

This story seems, at first, kind of self-serving.

Except it’s not.

I’ve never been a huge genealogy person. I know what I know, and that’s enough.

Maybe I’m scared what a little research might reveal. Maybe I’ll find out some of my relatives were heinous criminals or total weirdo losers.

Or maybe I just don’t care all that much.

But that’s OK. Donald Boyer cares enough  for the both of us. Continue reading

Today, I visited an air duct factory.

In this screenshot, Ken Brown, president of MKT Manufacturing, is contemplating his love of ducts. To watch the video, click here.

Today, I visited a duct factory.

No, not the tape.

MKT Metal Manufacturing in Manchester Township, Pa., makes air ducts for commercial buildings and the kinds that are exposed in super swanky apartments.

Think ducts are boring, eh?

You’re wrong. Ducts are cool for a lot of reasons. Continue reading

Rambling conversation with senior citizen turns into really cool manufacturing story

In other news, I took this photo last week in an alley. North York is apparently where York Fair stuffed animal prizes go to die.

In other York Fair news, I took this photo last week in an alley. North York is apparently where York Fair stuffed animal prizes go to die.

So, I went to the York Fair this year.

A lot.

While I was reporting on this story, I met a senior citizen that wouldn’t stop talking to me.

Initially, it was kind of annoying.

I wanted to write my story, get it out of the way and move onto the zillion other things I needed to do that day. Yet he wouldn’t take my body language cues.

He kept talking and talking and wouldn’t leave me alone.

Then, he said something crazy. Continue reading

Car wars: The business of booting in downtown York , Pa.

Sure, they’re all over big cities — used by police as a punishment for those who refuse to pay their parking tickets.

But when the boot came to York, people seemed more than confused.

They wondered: Are the police doing this? The parking authority? Continue reading

Attention blog readers, please vote for my awkward video in DFM’s Tout Bout

That’s my face looking awkward in a video I entered in the August Tout Bout. I’m a finalist. Vote for me. That is all.

Hey there.

So, remember when I last wrote about Tout?

Well, I have some more Tout-related excitement.

A ridiculous video of me being awkward has been chosen as a finalist for the August Tout Bout through DFM.  Continue reading

Giant sunflowers, the case of the missing WellSpan EMS, and other happenings

Between vacation and other shenanigans, I have been really REALLY bad at blogging lately.

So, here’s the run down of what I’ve been up to since the strip club story broke my heart when it ended abruptly: Continue reading
