Thanks for the votes, you guys!

This is my “Yay, I won!’ face. It’s the same as my “I’m scared to death on a boogie board.” face.

So, I won the August Tout Bout in the mobile category, taking 37 percent of the vote.

If you voted for me, thanks! You rock! Love ya!

And if you don’t have Tout, you should sign up.

NewsVrooming with the Girl Scouts at Dover Area Community Library

So, last night was super fun.

I joined co-workers Brittany Wilson and Sarah Chain to kickoff the NewsVroom’s yearlong initiative of visiting York County libraries.

We traveled to Dover Area Community Library, where I had the opportunity to present my ideaLab project to Girl Scout Troop #20195.

Before a mock press conference, I discussed basic apps (QuickVoice, iMovie, Notability, 360Pano, etc.) and I got to play this video of this old man with his funny cane.

The best part: One of the girls recommended I go set up my “office” at Chuck-E-Cheese.

Loves it.

Here are some photos from the event:

I had to drive the NewsVroom van, because — let’s be honest — everyone else was scared to.

Liveblogging the ‘pie party’ and other assorted random weekend shenanigans

Because I’m ridiculous …

And because I overestimate the interest in my random adventures …

And because I want practice liveblogging, so I’m not like “Um, how the heck do I use this?” when I have to do it for breaking news …

I’m liveblogging the rural ‘pie party’ extravaganza I’m going to around 7 p.m. Click here on our York Common Cents blog for updates, if you care.

Feel free to chime in with a comment and annoy me. Continue reading

Takeaway points from White Rose Thunder: A photo essay

I spent the day Thursday at White Rose Thunder, a four-day motorcycle event at the York Expo Center.

I had a blast.

Why am I covering this, you ask?

Because I’m the manufacturing reporter. I get to cover Harley-Davidson’s York plant, which also means learning about various biker-y things that come my way.

When I took this job more than a year ago, I knew virtually nothing about motorcycles. To be honest, I still don’t know a whole lot, but I’m learning.

So, in honor of learning, here’s a list of takeaway points from White Rose Thunder captured with my iPhone 4S: Continue reading

From iPhone photo, to online, to print: Royal Farms chicken takes a tumble

A large chicken takes a tumble.

So, this is a first.

I was working this Saturday, and all hell broke loose with the weather.

I was driving back to the office from lunch when a monsoon erupted.

I called my editor and asked if I should get a photo of something going on to post with a web update.

The rain. People hating the rain. Whatever.

Finally, Lauren learns how to shoot video that doesn’t get cut off in Brightcove!

The guys from the new event, White Rose Thunder, invited the media out Thursday for a flat track racing demonstration at the York Fairgrounds.

I’ve written about the event before, at least twice, so I figured I’d do a video with a QR code for print, since I figured motorcycles whizzing around a dry dirt track has to show up great on camera. Continue reading

Something I learned: How to make sure your tweets show up on location-based maps like Gathering Point

So, I was starting to get mega POed, because my tweets weren’t showing up on these  Gathering Point maps folks are starting to make at the office.

I felt left out.

I went to the Location Services tab in the Settings app on my iPhone and thought I activated the Twitter switch:

Alas, my tweets were still lost in an abyss. Continue reading
