Today in mobile reporting news: Someone punched my car

Today started like this and ended with a punch in my car.

This morning was lovely.

I had a pleasant walk from my house to the OffCenter Grill at the Yorktowne Hotel, where I planned to sip coffee and put the finishing touches on a story for the business page.

On the walk home, I stopped at the market and ran into Nuts About Granola employee Kenny Brown, who recommends a piano bar in this oh-so-awesome video I made at my last mobile reporting at the venue.

I bought some fresh vegetables. I went home and ate lunch. Continue reading →

#Weldinglikeajournalist: York County Technical School teacher Joshua Seitzer shows me how it’s done

A few weeks ago, I spent some time at York County School of Technology for a story about welding that’s going to print this Sunday.

I hung out in the shop and YDR photographer Jason Plotkin made this video of me trying my hand at the trade and wearing oh-so-chic safety garb.

It really captures my personality, I think.

As an added bonus, the beginning showcases that awesome intro I wrote about last week.

Keepin’ it classy: Working from the 86-year-old Yorktowne Hotel

The morning started in style.

Don’t get me wrong.

I love a loud, obnoxious, shenanigans-filled ruckus as much as the next reporter.

I love frolicking among York County’s strangest in gas stations, diners and undisclosed locations.

I love it all — just not when I’m trying to meet deadlines.

On Tuesday, I just needed to work — transcribe long recordings, specifically.

And what better place, I figured, than the elegant, 86-year-old historic landmark I had written about a few weeks earlier. Continue reading →
